If I Could Dream

by Mohamed Saloo

If I could dream
I’d picture a sky blanket blue
The sun waving its rays
The sea flowing so calm
The sand unblemished by feet
The beach free and pure
The hammock between the palm trees
Waiting for me

If I could dream
I’d picture the scene of a sunset
The scattering of autumn leaves
The freshness of lush green grass
The crisp breath refreshingly cool
The breeze whispering in the silence
The sky painted in oranges and reds
Waiting for me

If I could dream
I’d watch flakes of snow falling
The fields in romantic white
The rooftops with postcard chimneys
The sun like a circle pearl
The children wrapped in hats and scarves
The play of shaped up snow
Waiting for me

If I could dream
I’d picture flowers blossoming in spring
The colours brightening fields
The trees’ rebirth of leaves
The mornings with tweeting birds
The growth of grass on land
The scent of opening buds
Waiting for me

If I could dream
I’d picture a home, a wife and children
The greetings from toddlers on return
The stories at bedtimes read
The playing of silly games
The rocking of babies to sleep
The embrace of a tired child
Waiting for me

If I could dream
I’d picture a garden of family and friends
The laughter from carefree words
The grouping of children in play
The assemblies of conversations deep
The food laid out in spread
The rallying when it’s time to eat
Waiting for me

If I could dream
I’d picture the boredom of morning life
The waking to cereal bowls
The rushing to a bathroom in demand
The hurried greetings of morn
The tasks before leaving home
The concern of wearing a coat
Waiting for me

If I could dream
I’d picture her smiling
Her hair flowing free
Her eyes bright like stars
Her hands softly caressing
Her voice in gentle speech
Her smile rendering me speechless
Waiting for me

If I could dream
I’d clear the stains etched on my mind
The visions of brutal murder
The screams of victims of rape
The cries of onlookers helpless
The laughter of aggressors armed
The fear of hopelessness
If I could dream

If only I could dream
I could leave my tears for a night
Sleep a peaceful spell
Then maybe
Just maybe
Find a moment of peace
Waiting for me.
