Lonely – Remembering Jo’s Legacy

by Jackie Darnbrough

Can we see it

reflected

in your desperate eyes?

The cold grey fear of returning

to a house holding no-one,

searching across a chasm

for a touch, a smile. Kindness

You are the isolate,

watching with envy

those, whose friends

wrap them in safety

with sparking smiles,

we are ignorant of your unsought solitude.

Unaware of your sadness,

of your loneliness, of your tears.

We are content in our envelope of warmth.

Some of us turn away, embarrassed

by your otherness and choose

not to see.

So small a cost to reassure

with a gesture of care,

that you have a meaning, a value

that YOU too belong.
