Violent harangues of hunger pangs,
Solemnly supressed by invoking hands.
Tired, listless, lethargic limbs,
Silently cleanse the soul from sins.

I had no self-respect,
So I covered my flesh,
So I lowered my gaze
So I held my tongue
So I quashed my anger.
Mother Earth embraces hope, in the absence of her enemy.
She smiles at our insignificance, our arrogance, the irony.
For Mother Nature flourishes, as we battle to survive,
She struts her stuff with joyous pride, as we contemplate our lives.
Have you ever felt the melodious bird song lifting up your tired wings?
Have you ever felt the power of sunbeams healing every aching limb?
Have you ever felt the celestial hymn easing the chaos in your mind?
Have you ever felt the strength of hope replacing despair with a smile?
A cherished childhood spent cocooned in my inward-looking community,
Protected me from the indoctrination of a white-privileged history.
But when I stepped into a world where brown was under-represented
My identity…Was molested.
My speech, skin, hair and dress, seemed to cause the white man stress.
And brown was a tan on the white man’s skin,
The silence wrapped itself around me, smothering senseless voice,
Cocooning me in blissful calm from naked, nauseating noise.
Bitter envy clothed in praise, a blackened heart lauds acclaim.
Face to face sincerity, followed by disparity, blatant contrariety.
